About This Project
This provides information about participating in a project about Human Rights Awareness in the NWT. You should read the information carefully to decide if you want to participate.

What is this Project?

This project is to understand more about what people know about human rights in the Northwest Territories. The project will ask questions to people who identify as Indigenous, or who are new to Canada, and also live in Dettah, Ndilǫ, or Yellowknife.

This project is important because we want to learn more about the human rights experiences of Indigenous people and newcomers to Canada in the NWT.

This project is for The NWT Human Rights Commission. It is an independent agency that works to promote equality, human rights, and protect individuals and groups from discrimination under a law called the NWT Human Rights Act. The project will help improve the services of the NWT Human Rights Commission, especially to people who are Indigenous or are new to Canada.

The work on this project is being done by Triage Metrix, a consulting company based in Yellowknife. Any questions about the project should be sent to Triage Metrix using the contact information provided.

This research is authorized under Northwest Territories Scientific Research License No. 17631.
This project has been reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee at Aurora College. If you have questions regarding your rights as a research participant or how the research is being conducted you can contact the manager of the Aurora College Research Ethics Committee at 867-872-7084 or chairrec@auroracollege.nt.ca.

How Do I Participate?

If you are interested in participating, you will be asked questions to verify that you are eligible. These questions take about 5 minutes or less to complete. There is no payment for answering these questions. There are two parts to this project: 1) a survey, and 2) an interview. You can participate in either or both of these parts.

What is the Survey Part of the Project?

Survey If you are eligible and decide to participate you will be asked to complete a survey. The survey will take about 20 minutes. The survey will be online. You will need a computer or smartphone connected to the Internet to complete the survey. If you don’t have a computer or smartphone connected to the internet, you can also do the survey over the phone or in person with one of the project staff members. You will get $20 for completing the survey. It will be sent by e-transfer to your Canadian bank account. You can also choose to pick up your payment in cash. You will have to show ID if you want to pick up your cash in person. After you complete the survey, we might contact you by email or phone to clarify your answers. We will only contact you if you give us permission. If you don’t want us to contact you to talk about your answers, you will still be paid for completing the survey.

Language to Participate :The survey questions can be provided in English or French. Wherever possible the questions will be made available in Wilideh or an NWT Indigenous language, or in another language that you understand. This may require the use of an interpreter. We will do our best to provide the questions in a language you understand, but if we are unable to provide written translation or simultaneous interpretation, or you do not want to use an interpreter for your language, you will not be able to participate.

What is the Focus Group/Interview Session?

Some people who complete the survey will be invited to join a focus group, which is a group interview. This interview will be to ask more questions about your experiences with human rights and discrimination.

The interviews will mostly be in person but some may be online via a video call or by phone. These will take about 1 hour. There will be up to 8 people in each interview. Audio (voice) will be recorded during interviews so they can be transcribed. The recording will be deleted after it is transcribed.

Languages to Participate: Interview sessions can be provided in English or French. Wherever possible the questions will be made available in Wilideh or an NWT Indigenous language, or in another language that you understand, at your request. We will do our best to provide interview sessions in your language of choice. You will be offered options to join online or in-person focus group sessions. If you feel more comfortable you can request to be interviewed by yourself.

People who complete interviews in person will get $100 and if they complete an interview online via a video call they will get $75. The in-person participation amount is higher because you will have to travel to an interview location in Yellowknife, Dettah or N’dlio. Payment will be sent by e-transfer within 10 days after your interview. You can also choose to pick up your payment in cash at the in-person interview, or in-person after your interview. You will have to show ID if you want to pick up your cash in person.

Risks and Discomforts

Some people might find talking about human rights and their experiences uncomfortable. You do not have to share anything in the survey or in the interview that you do not want to share. If there is a question you want to share only with the project staff, you can talk to one of them privately after the interview.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is extremely important to us and we take a number of steps to make sure your information is kept safe. Your name will not be included in any of the reports about the information you share in surveys or interviews. We take steps to not share information in our reports, such as specific details about your experiences that might identify you. To participate in the survey or interview you will need to provide your first and last name. We will also need a phone number or email address to contact you. Your name and contact information will not be shared with anyone outside the research team. No participant names or information will be shared with the NWT Human Rights Commission or be in any of the reports. The final report will have general information about the participants such as the age ranges, country of birth, and Indigenous identity. Your information and responses will be stored in our secure online data system. Only the project team has access to this information. The information will be kept for three years after the project, as is required for this type of research, and then it will be deleted. If you choose to participate in the interviews, other people in the interview will hear what you say. Participants in the interviews, including you, will be asked to not talk about who was at the interviews or what they said. Even though other participants will be asked to keep the information confidential, there is a chance they might tell others.

What Information Will be Collected?

Your name and contact information is collected. This information is only used so we can communicate with you about the project. This is not shared with the NWT Human Rights Commission and your name will not appear in the report. Demographic information is collected. This helps us understand how people of different Indigenous or cultural identities, ages, educational backgrounds, and income answered the questions, and to make sure we have a variety of participants. In general, we do not report on a group size of less than 10 people to help maintain confidentiality.

Results

The results of this project will be written into a report for the NWT Human Rights Commission. The NWT Human Rights Commission plans to make the report available to the public. The report will summarize the results of the survey and interviews. It may include direct quotes but will not include any names. Before the report is finished, you will be given a summary of the results of the survey and interviews, if you participated in each of these. The purpose of sharing this with you is so that you as the knowledge holder are the first to see this information. We also want to hear from you if you have any comments or concerns about how the information is presented or interpreted. You will have 2 weeks to send us any comments.

How Do I Provide Consent?

Once you decide you want to participate you provide consent by signing the consent form. This can be done with paper or electronic copy. If an interpreter was used to explain the study to you in another language besides English, the interpreter also signs the consent form.

How Do I Withdraw my Consent?

You can withdraw your consent (change your mind) at any time before or during your participation in a survey or interview. You do this by telling one of the project staff in person, by phone, or by e-mail.

If you decide you do not want to have your information used in the project after completing the survey or an interview, you may withdraw by contacting one of the project staff in person, by phone, or by email. You will have up to 2 weeks after completing your survey or interview to withdraw. Your survey responses will be removed from our database. We will do our best to remove any information you provided in an interview, but in a group interview the transcripts may not identify who made each statement. You will be given the opportunity to help us identify any statements from your interview that you made.

You will be invited to keep your honoraria (payment) even if you withdraw from the research project after participating in the survey or interview portions.
